The Cliffs of Moher on the Silver Screen
Films shot at the Cliffs of Moher
1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009):
Dumbledore said it best when he said, “This place has known magic.” Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince features an epic Horcrux hunt and a spectacular scene filmed between the Cliffs of Moher and similar rockfaces in nearby County Kerry. Dumbledore stands with the titular schoolboy atop a curiously shaped sea stack, staring into a cave. The stack is actually one of the Skellig’s, Lemon Rock, but the cave is easily recognisable along the base of the Cliffs of Moher. This is one site you muggles won’t get from the cliff-top!
2. Ryan's Daughter (1970):
This truly iconic Hollywood movie about the unrequited love between an Irish woman and a British soldier set in the wake of the 1916 Easter Rising features a cameo from the Cliffs of Moher themselves. Filmed mainly in County Kerry, but the Cliffs appear in this romantic drama and are a continuous draw to the millions of fans of the classic!
3. The Princess Bride (1987):
William Goldman surely had County Clare in mind when he wrote The Princess Bride. Fourteen years later, the movie adaptation hit the screens, featuring the Cliffs of Moher as the aptly named ‘Cliffs of Insanity,’ cementing the location as a cinematic backdrop worthy of epic adventure! Inconceivable!
4. Into the West (1992):
This brilliant family adventure is a heartfelt story of two young boys and a horse. On a search for whatever home means, the end of the movie sees the unlikely trio finally reach the West in their bid to discover Tír na nÓg – the land of the young. The coast of Clare and the Cliffs of Moher might be the key to their search!
